Offline active safety systems expose you to risk.
See what's at stake if you have systems offline.

Percent of active safety systems offline

Based on equipped trucks, rounded to the nearest whole truck. At least one truck is counted when the percentage is above zero.

Cost per crash

Include only trucks equipped with forward collision mitigation. Monthly figures represent one average month (annual miles ÷ 12) with those trucks offline. Yearly figures assume they stay offline all year.

How the estimate is calculated

The estimate combines FMCSA crash rates and crash costs with IIHS research on automatic emergency braking (AEB).

Dollar results are modeled societal crash cost reductions. They are not predicted fleet bills, insurance savings, or cash the fleet would receive. Purchase, maintenance, downtime, and claim costs are not included.

Cost per crash: The blended average of $276,894 weights FMCSA's non-injury, injury, and fatal crash costs by how often each occurs. Those costs come from the 2025 methodology update and are stated in 2023 dollars. The conservative option prices every crash at the non-injury cost of $49,398.

Crash rate: 1.62 large-truck crash involvements per million miles, from FMCSA Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts 2022.

Rear-end share: 22%, from the FMCSA Large Truck Crash Causation Study.

AEB effectiveness: 41% reduction in rear-end crashes, from IIHS research on large trucks.

Expected crashes: miles × 1.62 per million × 22% × 41%. For 10 trucks at 120,000 miles each, that is about 0.18 expected preventable crashes per year.

Dollars: expected crashes × the selected cost per crash. With the blended average, that is approximately $0.0405 per mile.

Odds: 1 minus e raised to the negative expected crash count. This is the chance that at least one preventable crash occurs during the year.

The 22% share comes from a fatal-and-injury crash study and is applied to all crashes. Rear-end crashes are assumed to follow the all-crash severity mix. The national crash rate mixes vehicles with different equipment. These choices limit the precision of the estimate.

Time: One month equals annual miles ÷ 12. Yearly figures assume the same trucks stay offline all year.

"Offline" means the installed system cannot provide its intended assistance. Working systems do not eliminate crash risk. This tool does not calculate purchase cost, liability, settlement amounts, or guaranteed savings.
